What is Compounding?
Compounding is the art and science of preparing customized medications for every patient’s unique needs. Compounding pharmacists make medications that are:
- Personalized dosages
- Unique formulation (lozenges, troches)
- Difficult to find on the market
Compounded products are prepared based on a practitioner’s prescription, in which individual ingredients are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form. In essence, compounded medications are “made from scratch” by a compounding pharmacy to meet the patient’s specific needs.
Since compounded medications are custom and “made to order,” the compounding pharmacist works closely with the patient and the prescriber during the course of the treatment plan.
